The Great Karoo: Geology, Mineralogy, Groundwater, Uranium Mining
and Shale Gas by Peter Rosewarne.

With the 2025 FOSAGAMS Gemboree having been held at the Karoo National Park (KNP) just south of Beaufort West (BW), and hosted by the Cape Town Gem and Mineral Club, Peter thought it would be prescient to compile an article on the area’s geology, mineralization, groundwater and proposed mining/fracking. This was to get everyone up to speed on those aspects before they, or at least some of them, descended on the area at Easter 2025. This article should be read in conjunction with the sister one entitled, “Geology: Cape Town to Beaufort West on the N1” also by Peter Rosewarne

Geology: Cape Town toBeaufort West on the N1 by Peter Rosewarne

This article was originally prepared for the Cape Town members who were travelling to the 2025 Easter Gemboree. Peter then kindly undertook a return trip to Laingsburg a month later on 8th May, in order to update this article with Geoview/Geosite photographs so that it could be added to the EDUCATION section of our newly built website.  This article can be read in conjunction with the sister article “The Great Karoo: Geology, Mineralogy, Groundwater, Uranium Mining and Shale Gas” also by Peter Rosewarne.

Rock Art of the Northern and Western Cape by Duncan Miller

This guide is an illustrated description of the indigenous rock engravings of the Northern Cape and the cave paintings of the Western Cape Provinces, South Africa. Precise locations are not given, in order to protect the sites from over-exploitation. Visits to some sites can be arranged through local tour operators.

Stories in Stone by Duncan Miller

This guide is the 2022 version of an introductory description of the geology of the southwestern Cape, South Africa. It follows several day trip routes, with numerous photographs showing readily accessible outcrops of the varied rock types exposed.

Old Cape Town Mines by Trevor Vaughan Jones

Few people are aware of the old quarries that were in and around the Cape Town area and that were mined either to source minerals, or useful building materials. This guide mentions such places as the granite quarry on Seaforth beach, the Hout Bay manganese mine, the Vredehoek tin mine, and even a Gold Mine on Lions Head….
